Taking on a home renovation project is a lot of hard work, especially when you do most of the work yourself. DIY projects can be fun and rewarding but certain precautions should be taken during the process to avoid safety issues and injuries.
First, the demolition portion of the project should be considered its own, independent phase of the project. Most homeowners don’t give demolition a whole lot of consideration and just think of it as the prelude to the “real” project. This is incorrect. Demolition is physically demanding and more time-consuming than most homeowners realize. Organization and planning for demolition, along with the mindset that it is an entire phase of a project will help the process go much more smoothly and most importantly, safely.
Prepping for Demo
Make sure to have the right tools you will need to do the light demolition. If you discover that you do not have the right tools, be sure to purchase them.
Have the proper attire ready for demolition. This is one of the most important aspects of demolition safety. Make sure to wear thick, sturdy shoes to avoid stepping on nails and screws. There are disposable paper coveralls available if the demolition is very messy. If you are doing floor demolition or other work that involves hands-and-knees, a good pair of knee pads will work wonders. If you’ll be doing a lot of heavy work and lifting, a back-support belt will ease your fatigue. Wear a sturdy plastic hard hat whenever working overhead.
Lastly, sealing off the demo area will ensure the rest of your home does not get covered in a layer of dust. You also don’t want to scratch or scuff other areas of your home or get harmful odors throughout the rest of the house from your demolition.
Dumpster Rental
Renting a dumpster may be a better option than collecting large bags on your property or taking small truckloads to your local recycling plant. You can have the dumpster delivered directly to your home whenever you are ready and keep it there until you have completed the demolition portion of your project. You just drop the bags and items for disposal right into the dumpster and when you are done, you can just call to have the dumpster picked up and hauled away. Just like that, all of the demolition disposal is taken care of and you didn’t even need to leave your house.
During the Demo
Be sure to wear a respirator or mask. Demolition is a messy job and produces a lot of dust throughout the air. Breathing in a lot of dust will be uncomfortable and not a safe decision for your health. If you know you are dealing with hazardous materials or discover that you are during the process, be sure to contact professionals immediately.
Cleaning as you go will make the demolition process much more manageable and effective. Keep a broom and dustpan nearby and as debris builds up, just do a quick clean up so it doesn’t build up too much.
Post Demolition
Even if you have been cleaning up as you go, demolition is a messy job. Finish up the demolition before you start the renovation process by hiring a hauling service. These are less cost-effective than the roll-off, but good for demo projects smaller than a roll-off. For instance, if you’re tearing out a small-to-medium-size bathroom, you may want to just dump everything on the back patio and have the hauling company deal with it.
Finally, completely sweep and vacuum the work area. It is best to start with a completely clean slate as you move into active construction. Even a quick damp mopping is a good idea. Especially if you have family members with asthma or allergy issues, the less dust that ends up sealed inside wall cavities, the happier and healthier they will be.
